Pudge The Fish

Again, this drawing was done in developement for Disney's Lilo & Stitch. In this scene, Lilo is feeding Pudge the fish her peanut butter and jelly sandwich. This image never made it to the final film, but the idea of the fish was kept during the title sequence as a down shot through the water. I like their verison better.

In my drawing, you can see that I'm playing around with some underwater lighting effects and refractions. This image was drawn in graphite.

As a note: the underwater fauna was completely incorrect in my drawing. I couldn't find underwater Hawaiian reference at the time, but when I was sent to Hawaii with the Disney research trip I had an opportunity to snorkel in the ocean ... and discovered that I had missed the mark. The corral is very different there, and not as colorful ... but the fish do eat from your hand. While we were feeding the fish, one of the parrot fish bit art director Ric Sluiter on the hand so hard he drew blood. So much for the saying, "Don't bite the hand that feeds you."

Thanks for all your comments, I do appreciate them.

I enjoy this blogging thing because I'm able to share some of the work that typically is never seen, aside from the occasional piece that makes it into a Disney book from time to time. I can also add some technical information and some memories.

Hello Mr. Marcelo I find your work very inspiring uplifting and breathe taking all in one your ability to tell the story through your images is something I find myself fighting with everyday. Growing up I loved rendering images that I liked but when I attended Sheridan it seemed that the illustrative side of me was forced back. Now that I've been exposed to your work and other great artist that apply rendering to their work I wish I had stood firm and keep up with it well I said to much just wanted to share how your work has helped me reconnected with a part of myself THANKS VERY MUCH FOR THE ART AND SHARING OF IT WITH THE WORLD!!!!! take care and I wish you much more success and happiness.

Hey Marcelo,

I can see how important studying photos is when I look at your work. All the things that amazes me about your images, is the things you take for granted when looking at a photo. Love the surface of the water and the way the light is breaking through and even reflects on the fish in the water. Your drawings makes me understand what to look for in photos.
Thanks for the tip on how to experiment with objects out of focus. Will definitely explore. Just posted my second vellum piece on my blog and would appreciate any feedback you can give:)
What is your approach when doing the outline(on vellum). My problem with the piece I just did was that I outlined everything with the the same value, which kills the depth.

Thanks for all your help and have a good easter,

Hans

I love that image... it's nice to see work from my favorite disney movie.. You're right about the coral, I kinda grew up in hawaii... And man do those fish get greedy ;). Thanks for your comment on my blog. I have thought of various different subtsi-cats and creatures, but it just takes so much time to put one of those rascals together... If you want a hairless cat, make sure the breeds personality is something you like, cause if it is, they are well worth the price.

I spent over a thousand on two siamese cats, becuase I heard they were the dogs of the cat world... I thought that would be a cool combination... They are awesome! One is like a dog, the other, however is a bit more like a monkey :).
