Brother Bear "Fashion" Designs?

Here are some character designs I did for Brother Bear.

The original assignment was to draw some prehistoric cavemen, but as the project developed the cavemen turned into Pre-Columbian Eskimo.

So, here are a father and son, preparing for some dramatic hunting occasion…but really it was an excuse to draw the wardrobe and show the directors what I had in mind in terms of clothing, jewelry and weapons.

  2. Really nice character designs. Very dynamic too. It would have been interesting to see Brother bear with a bit less eskimo and a little more caveman. Why was it decided upon to move away from the prehistoric look?

  3. I wish I could answer that, but I was working freelance for the picture at that time, and so I wasn't in the studio when that decision was made.

Currently, there are a lot of cavemen type projects in development around town, among which are the Geico Cavemen TV series, Dreamworks Crood Awakening, Rifkin's Homo Erectus, and caveman-like video games. If Disney would have taken that bold leap and made it a movie about cavemen in 2001, they would have been leading the pack.

  6. These designs don't seem too far off from where they ended up in the final film. I kina liked the Eskimo thing. It felt pretty ancient.

Also, beautiful designs, Boss. Elegant. But then again, what comes off your pencil that isn't?

  8. Mmmmmmmmmm. Fashion designs! They're lovely - they're at least -practical- for their time period, to be perfectly honest, and properly symbolic too. (I'm all about practical, sadly. That makes me a very poor fashion designer, to some extent!)

    I love 'em!
