I was going through a folder filled with odd sketches and came across this one. I can't remember why I drew this, but it looks like a Planet of the Apes inspired sketch -- or just a samurai ape. This sketch was drawn on bond with graphite, and obviously from imagination.

ReplyDeleteThanks everyone! I really do appreciate all your kind comments. I also have to appologize for not posting anything lately. Whew, I've been so busy and my life has been quite hectic I haven't had a chance to add any new posts.
ReplyDeleteI just love all the qualities everyone is reading into this character. When I'm drawing I see all these qualities as my imagination is flush with swirling emotion. Bits of incongruent memories are sifted through a virtual sea of recollections and are being connected in a creative chain that finds its way to the tip of my pencil. It is skeletal, it is Burton's apes, it is Harry and the Hendersons, it is the sum total of all those documentaries with Goodall and Fossey, all those cantankerous persons filled with wisdom that I've met over the years, and odd personalities, postures and gestures that I've seen at Daphnes.
In essence, the things we draw are the sum total of our experiences, our emotions, and our psyche.

Anonymous, thanks for the compliments about my work. I'm not quite sure how to interpret your comment about my signature. My concern is about copyright protection, not making sure you can read my signature. I WANT my signature to ruin my images in order to prevent unauthorized reproduction of my work, but allow my peers, colleagues and friends to see what I'm up to.
I don't think the artist is interested in showing his over inflated ego . . . his work speaks for itself and rises above the rest without question. It's the Orphan Acts that has created this issue. We should be so lucky to take a peek at what's in Marcelo's mind, he's one heck of a talent. AND, we're lucky enough that he doesn't plaster his name over the image like some of us posting here on the ether.
