Upon Request...Roughs

Hello everyone:
Some people have been asking how I work, and what my roughs look like...so here are a few I did for Lilo & Stitch.

My friend Paul Felix had done an earlier version of Lilo's house that set the style for the architecture, I put it up on the hill with the carport underneath, and then he came back and added the extra room on top. Afterwhich, I took my pencil like a camera and went scouting for location ideas and compositions.

Nice comps man. Very clean and readable. Did these have some back and forth, or did you just do these for exploration?

Marcelo, these are GREAT! I lack very much in backgounds, so this is inspirational for me. If you don't mind me asking, what type of pencil did you use for these?

Thanks! These were just exploratory sketches, with no back and forth. I did a bunch of rough location scouting for this project. I also had done a lot of pen sketching for this project as well. I'll see if I can dig some of those up as well.

Travis, I'm sure I drew these with an HB pencil. That's typically what I use, so I'm pretty sure that's what I used on these. I also drew these on Bienfang Ledger paper.

Hey Marcelo,

Thanks for answering all my questions and posting some roughs. Hey, these look like they have a little perspective to them. I wanna see those abstract light and dark pattern roughs you were talking about. Haha! Thanks again Marcelo. Oh I finally started a blog please swing by and check it out.

Hey Marcelo,

These are really great and very inspiring. You found some really interesting and rare angles. Must be fun to explore locations like this and definitely an exercise I'll try out next time. I also have to try out that ledger paper, I'm just waiting for the next film to go into production so I can get started on some more location designs. I hear that you're finishing up on "Surf's Up", what's the next project for you?....if you can tell. I'm going to see "Monster House" this weekend, did you work on that as well?

Take care,

Hans

Thanks everyone for you kind words.

Hans, I really don't know what the company has in store for me. We shall see. So far, they haven't told me a thing. Sometimes no news is good news in this business.

As for Monster House, no...I didn't work on it, but I wish I did. It looks really fun.

Oh, I thought I would mention, the reason for the quirky camera angles was because I was taking the position of the bounty-hunter aliens staking Lilo's house out.

I wanted to see the house from various "hidden" angles to create the feel that the viewer is spying on the house.
