BANYAN TREE DIAGRAM

This was one of the designs for Geek's tree, it was based on a banyan tree. Our character Geek lived insided the roots -- his home was sort of like a burrow under a tree.

But, that alone isn't enough information to design the tree, so I created a series of documents to help explain the tree exterior. Here's another document from that design package that was created to describe the construction of the banyan tree to the modeling department. (My good friend Armand Serrano did an excellent cut-away view of the interior, I hope he posts that on his blog.)

Part of the trick is drawing and desgining any element, but in this business the other part is understanding it well enough that it can be communicated to the next department. In the end the tree turned out extremely well; we had some of the best modelers in the business working on our show.

Love your drawings?
How much time and research you do in order for you to make a good design? or you make things up from your imagination and memory?

I bet the modeling department really appreciated this. Really extensive research. Production design's cool because you get to learn a little about everything.

great work, sir!

Beautiful studies that work particularly well communicating the idea with both the graphic silhouettes and prismapencil drawings. Great work Marcelo!

Mmmmmmmmmm. Reeeeeeeeseaaaaaaaarch. Probably my favourite part of anything. That's great, Marcelo! And the drawings are fantastic - those are the sorts of diagrams/explanations I love when I'm dealing with costumes/designing. I'm learning -so- much just looking at what you post up for these. :) YAY!

Good luck on the awards. I swear, rooting for you ALL THE WAY.

That sounds like the perfect job, I love drawing trees. I could easily spend a few hours just drawing different leaf styles. You're a lucky lucky person, and quite talented.

Even how many times I look at this drawing, my friend, the "magic" is always there. Thanks for posting.

Vignali, Wonderful drawings, and just as important, very clear notes. Just starting doing vis dev at American Greetings and have done the same sort of thing. There is quite a bit of back and forth if notes are not crystal clear. Thanks for posting all of your inspirational work, I'm a big fan.

Marcelo, Oops, my apologies, meant to lead off with your first name! (duh)

I admire the amount of work that goes into crafting features. I consider "most" feature animation artists to be at the pinnacle of the craft.

Even when a shot is shown only for a second on screen, there is amazing attention to detail.

It's high time audiences understood what goes into creating these worlds.

Great work Mr.Vignali
