Surf's Up Props

Here's another prop from Surf's Up.

There was a scene during our film when our characters were going to be at a luau and banquet. The scene was storyboarded, a prop list was made, and we designed the props (and in some cases the props were painted and modeled in 3D), but the scene was later cut from the film. Even still, I thought it was a fun idea and a drawing worth sharing.

This little guy is playing a bamboo drum, similar to the PVC drums. Since the penguins already have flippers, the instrument would be easy to play. Watch this video to see how it would have sounded. Just click here to listen!

He also had bamboo chimes and coconut cymbals to accompany his drums.

That little chap looks like he's having the -time- of his life! Beautiful design on the bamboo, and creative too - love the sound of the PVC tubulum. And those windchimes ROCK THE HOUSE!

I'd love to build a set of those.

These would have been fun to see go through production all the way. It's a cool sound, too! Great stuff!

Thanks. Can never get enough! How is the prep for the class going?

Cool concept! Would've been neat to see this scene realized.

Thanks Robi, Dave, and Nicolas.

Tirso, I'm glad you are enjoying the blog.

Seth, Cedeboda, yeah, it's a shame it didn't get much further. There was so much that we designed for the banquet scene. I guess we'll have to find room for it in Surf's Up II. (I don't want to start any rumors, 'cause our studio isn't even talking about Surf's Up II yet.)

Grant, I'm working on the videos right now.

Shuku, if you build one, I wanna see it!

Another amazingly functional image Vignali. I can really imagine these penguins using all the props you create for them. They seem so believably usable.

I like the design stuff from cut scenes actually...perhaps even more than the ones that made it in. It's cool to see depth to the movie that didn't make it on, kind of like finding out a fact about a favorite book you didn't know before.
