Brother Bear Concepts for Humans

These images were created for Brother Bear.

I had been charged with the task of creating some concept sketches for the animals in this world, as well as some of the humans. In this case here I've drawn one of the younger human members of a hunting party.

This was interesting because when I drew this image the Disney Studio remarked that they were interested in the graphic nature of the skin cape, as well as the uniqueness of the bone goggles. I was looking forward to seeing something like that in the final film -- but it was not to be.

Part of my job here was to do as much research as possible about the stone age implements, tools and tailored hide clothing. So, in that regard, the clothing, stitching, and crafting of tools was very accurate. But, the Inuit make really elaborate outfits, but I had to actually draw them in a more primitive manner so as to fit the feel the studio was looking for.

When I was doing research the bulkiness of the clothing was one of the things that stood out to me, as well as the way in which the leather skins tended to fold -- being that the fur was kept on the inside of the clothing.

All but the top drawing were drawn with Prisma Pencil on newsprint. It looks to me as though that one may have been drawn on vellum.

Obviously, all of these are drawn without models -- this is where figure drawing and sketching in public really pays off.

These are some beautiful drawings! Very expressive. I really like the clothing and the drapery. It's stunning how much dynamic a drawing of a guy leaning on a stick can have!!!

Beautiful Marcelo. Love the tactile feel and "non-traditional" "character designs." Love 'em, especially the top image.

I think I appreciate most that you're able to emote through your characters, both in their pose, and in their expression. Powerful stuff Marcelo. Apparently I need to borrow a leaf from your book and draw more often. Thanks for sharing your work.

Hey Moe?

I see you got some of those annoying comments with the Chinese looking writing that go on, and on, and on. I got one on every single one of my posts. I'll be deleting for days! It seems like you should be able to block these jerks, but mine are from "Annoymous". Ugh!

Hope all's well.

Hey Marcelo!

It's been a while. These are awesome and nice with the extra info. Wish I had that kind of training in life drawing.

I'm in L.A. now, finishing up on my portfolio, so I can get ready for job hunting. SONY is in Studio City right? I'm in North Hollywood, so pretty close by.

Take care,

-Hans

I just got back from Argentina from visiting family. It's nice to travel, but there's nothing like being home.

Thank-you, everyone, for all your kind comments.

Jer, me too.

Brandon: I guess that's part of what makes a drawing fun to look at. If a drawing looks labored, it becomes painful to look at, so I try to avoid that over-worked look. Thanks for noticing.

Aldo: Thanks, the notes are also part of my thinking, and part of what I'm selling to Disney. It's sort of like I'm selling the research as well as the designs.

MAC: I figured Disney has enough people giving them that Disney look, so I tried to give them what I bring to the table instead. I also tried to give them more than what they could animate, so they could decide how to interpret the designs. And yes, I had a wonderful and safe travel. Thanks.

Ty: Thanks, I really enjoy the research. I also try to get inside my character's head too.

Sam: Yeah, it would have been cool to see those bone goggles in the final animated designs.

Gaurishankar: The "flow," that's where the life is.

Ian: I'll be there. I won't have a booth, but I'll be poking around.

TH3DEN: Yeah, that's the wonderful thing about blogging, we ALL get to see artwork that used to never see the light of day. I'm glad you enjoyed these posts.

Paul: Yeah, they got me while I was out of the country! Drat! But, now that I'm back I dumped that comment, so now I'm going to find out if they did the same to me. If so, I'll be deleting for days too! I'll probably be posting some pict from my trip to Argentina.

Silver Knight: It'll be a good one, but Pacquiao's speed will make the difference. A few years ago, before Roach took the reins, Pac-man didn't know how to fight backing up. But, now that he is a more rounded fighter, he's going to have to use those skills because Hatton is going to pressure him. The way to beat a faster fighter is with pressure, so Hatton needs to try and catch Pacquiao while they're trading punches -- as opposed to attempting to count-punch Pacquiao. Heh-heh, can you tell I used to box?

Hans: It's good to know you're here in LA! Sony is actually in Culver City, but I'm hoping you can you come out and join us for a Sketchclub session. Drop me an email and let's get hooked up.

I like very much your Brother
Bear corner.
