I found a great place to do figure drawing...

My buddy Israel Martinez has set up a drawing studio inside Graphaids in Westchester. It's uninstructed, so you just show up and draw.

Manchester Space
7280 Manchester Blvd
Westchester, CA 90045
Thursdays 7pm-10pm
$15.00

I drew this image in my usual magic marker, but then used photoshop to place it over this aged paper. I think this was a five minute sketch.

She looks like she's carved in marble! Gorgeous sketch, Marcelo.

How do you get a magic marker to look like conte?

Marcelo Vignali said...

Thanks Ale!

Adam, I dry out my marker. If I press hard, it gives me a good amount of ink, and if I press lightly it gives me a charcoal pencil-like effect.

i think it's ur super understanding of the figure which does the magic on paper, the marker takes the credit:)

Hey Marcelo!
Great work on the blog. The figures have beautiful lines, and you have to be proud of that WOW packaging art! Most of all though, I'm really enjoying these animated dogs with their great sense of movement. Thanks.

Abhishek, you are too funny.

Craig, thanks. That's the thing about working with the marker, there's no going back. Once a decision is made, it can't be taken back. And, it forces me to work quickly. The slower I move the marker, the more ink flows out of the tip.

Thanks Henry, I liked your figure drawing too.

Mike, I'm glad you liked the dogs, they were a lot of fun to draw.

Thanks JP, Ken, Chris, Romulo, Riabovitchev and Omar.

Jose, sinembargo te voy a guardar un lugar.

Carcamo, agradecimentos, você é demasiado bom com migo.

do you go there regularly?

Marcelo Vignali said...

Jason, I just learned about this session, but I thought it was a good enough that I would go ahead and post it on my blog.

I attempted to get there the following week, but it interfered with my wife's tennis. But, hopefully she'll return to her regular scheduled tennis day and I can go again.

I'm going to try and make it this Thursday.

Didn't want to drop my comment in the Frazetta post (I think it needs its own space!)

And thank you so much for visiting my blog and commenting on it. It is a real motivation :) I have always been a little fan of your artwork. Thank you so much :)

Fantastic Fantastic. Do you use a wide nib marker or a whole range of large to small? Hope this makes sense fantastic non the less.
