Here's one from a few years ago...OK, a dozen years ago.I was poking around my files and ran across a folder of old artwork. This image was drawn back in 1996, when Disney animation was still 2D and had just released Hunchback in the theaters, and Pixar's Toy Story was released on VHS.
This was drawn with graphite on ledger paper.
I love the intensity of this one. That's one big dude.

ReplyDeleteI can almost feel that dude's fist connecting with my jaw. *rubs jaw gingerly* This is beautiful! (and even if you don't feel that way at work, I do though a lot less than at my old job.) I like the -shapes-. There's a poetic sort of geometry to it that makes my artistic sensibility go pitter-pat.

ReplyDeleteReally cool image. I cant believe that was in 96! I was only 11 at the time and still drawing from comic books. Its really cool to see older pieces from artist. I can see the growth and progression of your skills since then. Really inspiring.

Jed, thanks. I know-I know, I should get off my butt and just do it. I was working on a comic during the time I was commissioned for this project, and it dovetailed nicely into this work.
Shuku, that was the attempt. In order to get the movement in the drawing, I had to push the rhythm.
Tevik, Scarlet, Seth and Howard...thanks. That's what i was aiming for. For me, art is like music, ya gotta pour yer guts into it. Art without emotion becomes more like decoration.

ReplyDeleteTo answer your question David, I can't remember exactly what I did on this particular drawing since it was drawn a dozen years ago...but I remember what the pencil technique was. I would lay in my values with a 6B pencil and use a tissue to get my soft values. Then, I would tighten up the drawing with an HB pencil, using a 2B pencil for the darker values.
