Here's a bear design I did for Brother Bear. I was trying to thread the line between realism and caricature in an attempt to give the bear a personality we could relate to.
Man...this is just awesome. The first thing I notice is the personality of the bear. Great expression!!! And really nicely drawn!!! Would love to see more on this guy Marcelo. Did you do a character expression sheet ??
Ale, I like to make my drawings look dimensional, which I think is why I've been able to make a smooth transition into CG. I used to make little quick sculptures of my character designs, but after a while I was able to imagine the sculpture in my head and just drew it. This one was simply drawn without any visual aids.
Erin, you got it, that was the goal.
Andy and Animator, thanks you guys.
Philip, no model sheet on this one. It was all just vis dev work. I would rough out a bunch of designs, send it to Disney, and they would either use it for their character designs or soley for inspiration/exploration.
I think you totally hit it. One of my favourite drawings in the Brother Bear Artbook is the one you did with 2 bears fighting. So sculptural but nicely styled...always inspirational :)
Too bad.... I can't believe they wouldn't ask for a whole model sheet based off this design. The personality would have been great in different poses. I am sure if they requested the model sheet.. it would of looked great... their loss!! Thanks Marcelo for sharing your work.
Man the way your lines give dimension is awesome. I hope your job is treating you well!! Thanks for the comments btw. I'm really happy I switched over, I'm having a blast!!

Great design. It looks sculpted ;)
I just love him! Love his loose lips and his big scruff of a neck. He's very big and potentially dangerous, but lovable too!
Cool design Marcelo, great shapes and volumes :)
The facial expression & shading is pretty cool on this guy, nice job.

I dont know how you made it looking so 3-dimensional, but its great. Brother Bear looks furry and fat. Good work.
