Last Post Before Christmas...
I'm not sure, but this may be my last post before Christmas.
I hope all of you have a wonderful holiday (and to those that have already celebrated Chanukah, I hope it was equally wonderful). To those of you that will be away from your computers, I wish you a wonderful and hope filled New Year.
To those celebrating Christmas this year, Merry Christmas...and may God bless!
This is an early development piece for Surf's Up, a concept that never made it into the film. This being the penguins in the Antarctic would surf on the falling iceberg’s wakes.
But, we can still see the ice surfboards and tattoo/feather patterning I developed that did make it to the film … however I was not the character designer once the project moved into production. That job was given to another Surf’s Up Annie Nominee Sylvain Deboissy. He did an incredible job with the designs, I’m really proud of him.
The drawing was done on Clearprint Vellum with Prismapencil.

The day I joined the Surf's Up team very early in pre- poduction, this artwork was already hanging beside Moe's desk...that's how early on this concept was done. A brilliant vis dev piece to jumpstart a project. Merry Christmas, bro.
Your environment designs are so incredibly good! I envy your control of value.
What a fantastic idea! And a remarkably executed piece to sell it with. happy holidays!
Mo-you know I am a big admirer of your work and after having worked w/you on Open Season I have been privilidged to see you turn out many amazing pieces. This by far is one of my favorites and I remember seeing it on your board on one of our lunch meetings awhile back. I want to thank you for being one of the best b/c your work, talent, and drive is a real catalyst for me.

Greetings , Marcelo! Yes , I too listen to them from 10 years. And now both they and we became others. but it is our general youth.

That is one -kick-ass- viz-dev piece. It's perfect. Motion, icebergs, anticipation and -penguins-. I can't wait to go home and actually -see- Surf's Up on DVD.
And Blessed Christmas, incidentally! Will have lots to tell after tomorrow's two shows...

7am call time, still sewing at 2am.
Thank-you everyone for all your wonderful comments. I really do appreciate them.
I hope you all have a happy holiday, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Armand, thanks, your coming on board the project "made" the project in a huge way. I'm looking forward to the next chance we have to work together.
David, your holiday card is wonderful.
Randolph, you'll need to experiment with the vellum. Try using a stump, or a tissue to soften the prismacolor.
Shuku, good luck on your Christmas show, and I hope you enjoy Surf's Up.
Marcelo, Thanks for posting these wonderful pieces! I feel like I could just step right into these bg's! Truely inspiring work, and Happy Holiday's!!:)
Hey Marcelo :)
Compliments to your work, and all the kindest wishes for this Christmas to you and your family.
Even though I am not the best of Christians, I still am one and the Christmas always brings those special feelings of cheer and joy :)
All the best buddy.
Cheers,
Milenko
I hope someone is keeping track of all this original artwork youre doing Marcelo- its brilliant and Id hate to think it just gets locked away in a vault somewhere after the production is over.
Id love to see all your production art collected into a Marcelo artbook!
Merry Christmas Brother.
Martin, that's one of the best compliments you could offer me. Thanks.
Milenko, thanks, I hope you had a wonderful Christmas! I know what you mean about falling short in terms of being a good Christian. That's why both you and I need Christ's mercy. May God continue to bless you and your family in the coming year.
PS, I'm hooked on your blog!
Billy, yeah, but that's what I'm afraid of. Disney could publish a book of my feature work, and I wouldn't get a penny because they have all the originals. Yikes!!!
really great. from foreground to background you're telling a story, a sequence of events. I've never really seen anything like that before. Really creative way to use one image.
Hey Marcelo. I always enjoy lookin at your drawings. I remember your life drawing skills back in the imagineering Life drawing days until they had to put an end to it. But yah I wish they bring it back so Artists like me from Herbert Ryman group will have opportunities drawing with great artists like you. You the man! Im in the same year as Dalton N. Im glad I found your blog here. Now Im gonna have to add you.
Thanks for sharing your amazing work sir and all the inspiration that comes with each piece. Wishing you and yours all the best. Happy Holidays

Yes I agree that the "Artist" performs a specific and important role in our society.
I think thats the point, to express a unique individual experience that the world can authenticate as a personal truth. Unfortunately the line gets smeared due to the interests of businessmen who also have an important role.
But nowadays is the best time for the artist. For he or she has more tools than ever.
Thanks Friend
I will Def link you.
Awesome! This blog is very inspiring.
Prisma pencils??.. wonderful landscape.. HAPPY 2008!!..
Hey Marcelo, thank you so much for your message ;)
Hope all is well over there and, my goodness, this is a lovely illustration!
