Annie Award Results

This weekend the Annie Awards were held. Surf's Up had ten nominations, but it was Pixar's Ratatouille that ran off with the big cheese. Out of our ten Annie Award Nominations, we only received two Annie Awards under the Individual Achievement Categories.
Animated Effects
Winner: Deborah Carlson - "Surf's Up" - Sony Pictures Animation
Animation Production Artist
Winner: John Clark - "Surf's Up" - Sony Pictures Animation

Congratulations to both Deb and John, and to all the Annie Award recipients.

Here's a few more images from the project. I'll stop posting these and start posting something else.

This is a design I did for the fish piles in Shiverpool. I designed the igloos as being flat and squared, so as to compliment the cone-like shapes of the fish piles. I wanted it to look like a pile of fish, instead of a pile of lumber, so I designed the fish with a curve, so we could get the sense of the fish having weight.

And here is a portion of the ice walls I designed for the Antarctica scenes. There was a lot of effort in getting the canyon-like walls to look ideal, but yet still believable. If you look at the base, you can see the tiny Shiverpool island. I also made an effort to design the ice under the water as well too, as you can see from this image. There was another drawing that wrapped around this canyon, and started another canyon behind this one. That way we could use that as a backdrop to our canyon in order to create the silhouette against the sky.

This drawing, when combined with the other drawing, is pretty large. I would estimate it about three feet by four feet.

Hi Marcelo,
I love this stack of fish. It caught my eye in the book (along with all the other great work) but what I really like about this is the character that it has. Nice geasture, feeling, and weight. I was working on something similar for work for the Int. of a fish store. Something about the way you can stack and arrange something like that makes it a lot of fun using the weight of the fish ovberlapping each other. The Ice Canyon is awesome also. Great work.
Thanks for sharing,
Phil

FISH! Lots and lots of fish...it's a beautiful pile. :) There's definitely a wonderful sense of 'heavy and soggy and floppy' to it, lots of weight! I keep snickering whenever I think about the fish pile in the movie.

The Ice Canyon is...is...*insert speechless bubble here* That's gorgeous. And such a large drawing! Boggles my -mind- but given you're drawing it to scale, yeah, it would have to be about that big. It's imposing, it looks real, and it's just magnificently icy.

Thanks everybody.

I hope the image link isn't broken anymore. I reloaded the images in an attempt to remedy the problem.

I'll see what I can do Henry.

Yes Shuku, Ian and Philip, I was really pleased with the way the Ice Canyon turned out. I wanted it to read better than in real life, so I simplified it and made definite statements about the shapes.

Happy Valentines Day Lena. спасибо

Thomas, I'm glad you liked that little cove. Armand Serrano did most of the design work on that area, and I worked on the interior for the board-shack. I also found a wonderful picture on the web of a palm tree dipping into the water. Both Armand and I knew that was the sort of thing that area needed to make it special.

Jen, Ian, Ale and Philip, I'm glad you liked the floppy fish. I was very pleased when the modelers delivered what I had drawn.

amazing work... love your art
one question???
which advantages you have when working on vellum instead of doing it on paper?

can you take a look to my work, please, and tellme what you think????

Thanks George.
Tolomuco, the major difference between graphite pencil and paper verses vellum and prismacolor is the crispness of detail. If I need to draw something more technical, I use graphite. If I need a drawing to be softer, or more atmospheric, I'll use prismacolor.

Graphite can give me any effect I want, but when the drawings are softer, vellum is not as messy.

I also had a look at your work, it is very good.

El Grande, currently I've just finished work on Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and have been helping out on various unannounced projects for Sony Pictures.

As always the posts are a pleasure to look at. Their description which points out the challenges and goals of the production are extremely helpful in clearing deign choices. As an aspiring production designer what you are posting is gold, so if you have more Surf's Up keep them coming! and thanks for all your effort.

Marcelo,

You're great a thinking things through, generals all the way down to the nitty-gritty. Beautifully realized designs. The fish look so slippery and heavy. Nailed it.

Mr. Vignali,

Again you have created the most appealing and beautiful images. You have such a romantic quality to your work that just eases the viewers in and let's us happily be a part of the enviornment we wander off wanting only to return and take a second, third, and forth look. MAN you're good!!!

MAC

P.S. - There's NO WAY that you should have not been handed a trophy. I guess you will just have to settle for superior quality of work, a vast amount of superior craftsmanship, and the knowledge of doing the job better my friend. Your work answers the questions that one asks and in such grace and class. It's almost sickening. Almost!

Lovely sneaky peeks at the designworks as usual, Marcelo. And comisserations on missing out to Pixar, but then, a very worthy winner and no shame in coming second on the lion's share front to Ratatouille. Nice one matey!
