Open Season Pencil Drawing

This drawing was done during a testing phase for the Open Season Project.

We were in the process of creating a prototype version of our film in CG, in order to test out the style of the film. We did a crane shot of the camera moving over the landscape, trucking through the trees, and then camera moves over a hill, and finally we reveal this shot. So, the entire drawing was done in various levels like a 2D film, with trees in front on an overlay, meadow and hillside with bushes and rocks, and then the finale with the waterfall and and old saw mill.

We put it all together using Maya like a multiplane camera with my drawings placed on cards. We completed this exercise, but we never completed a CG version of this shot as we had originally planned.

The drawings were done with graphite on animation paper.

Awesome drawing! I'm always interested in the details - I wonder what size is the original and how long did it take you? Did you use much reference or draw it out of your head?

Thanks!

A really great geometric interpretation of nature. It's all smoothed down and given a really appealing rhythm.

I also appreciate how you separated foreground and background elements, and directed the eye right to the old mill.

Thanks everyone for all your kind words! Pencil drawings are getting more and more rare. Just recently I had to do a large drawing here at work, and I did it almost entirely in the computer.

Daniel: The original is about 11x17, and it took no more than a day or so to draw. Because this was part of a larger product, the final drawing wasn't as important as the whole effect of the 3D test. Not much reference since this is highly stylized.

I don't know that I can post the 3D test, but I'll track it down. Who knows?

Anonymous: I can be reached at vignalistudio@aol.com.

Oriol: Nice blog!

Tokyobanana: Keep on trying! That's how everyone in this industry makes it happen. You have to believe in yourself, and you have to keep trying.

Marcelo, your work is so clean on top of being extremely energetic. You are an inspiration!

In regards to the Orphan Works Act, would this really deprive artists of their ownership? If someone else takes it to use for their own profit, would that nullify your ability to use it on your own behalf?

Marcelo,

Hey, I'm getting married! I just wanted to get a hold of you somehow, and I figured this might be the best way to do it. I feel a bit embarrassed announcing it on such a public forum

Could I get your address to send you an invitation? You can email me at houstopha@gmail.com.

Also, I'm glad to see you're aware of the Orphan Works Act and active in opposing it. I'm interning with Brad Holland right now, who's heading up the opposition for the Illustrators' Partnership. It's a hard fight, and everyone needs to be involved!

Thanks! Talk to you soon.
