Exclusive Surf's Up Artwork
This is fairly recent artwork for the soon-to-be-released animated feature, Surf's Up. You won't find this image in the Surf's Up book!
This image didn't make it to the book, but a colored version of this image is printed on page 105. The image in the book is the final image that was used for design, but the image I'm posting here is the original pencil drawing I did for the concept. I was asked to remove the tiki totems for the final, and there were some other alterations. If you have the book, you can compare the two images.

Um . . .incredible man. Love the feel and detail. Did you tweak it and transform it a bit? Looks interesting.

That's my lens distortion effect. I worked it all out on my rough, but there's no tweaking on the final pencil, -- I drew this one out as it's seen here.
I guess I could have made it easier on myself and used Photoshop to tweak the final, but that's part of the fun for me.
(In general, I wanted the film to have a very dynamic look, so I drew out a lot of the early visual development drawings with some lens distortion.)
Once we got into production, we all had to take a much more practical and informative approach to our designs. You know, lots of schematics, plan views, and turn-arounds.
It looks BEAUTIFUL Marcelo. You are an amazing Draftsman/Craftsman. Thanks for sharing,

Just wow. I'll be sure to check out the movie and be grabbing a book as well. And as Mark said, quite the draftsman you are.
Brilliant work Marcelo, all the artwork from this film is looking amazing, can't wait to see it at the movies!
beeautiful stuff!!
This is solid gold.
I wasted six years in stupid games industry, stagnating and rotting my skill away.
And this single image has it all.
All the quality I will never be able to achieve.
Thanks for sharing.
Cheers to you,
Milenko

Thanks everybody. I'm glad to see all of you are as anxious as I am for the film's release.
Torsten,
The original is aproximately 17x20 inches. It's drawn on vellum with Prismacolor pencil.
Wow....amazing piece Marcelo!! I just ordered the book, and it should be here any day. Can't wait to see more. I really hope the film does well. The artwork itself deserves the attention.

Marcelo you are my hero! I can't believe this was drawn with a pencil. Incredible.
Nicely done! Did you have anything to do with the character designs of the movie? I like the look of the characters.
